How to Take the Perfect Photo of Your Pet

Find good light

Natural daylight is your best friend. Position your pet near a window or step outside into soft, shaded light. A bright but overcast day is close to ideal. Avoid harsh midday sun and on-camera flash, which flatten detail and wash out fur — flash can also give pets glowing eyes that are hard to correct.

Get down to their level

Crouch or sit so the camera is at your pet's eye level. Shooting from above distorts their proportions, while an eye-level shot captures the connection and personality that make a portrait feel like them.

To get ears up and eyes towards the lens, hold a treat or a squeaky toy just above the phone, then take the shot the moment they look. A few quick photos in a row gives you the best chance of one keeper.
